What is the best sleeping position?

The Latex Mattress Perfect For Every Sleep Style

The way you sleep can have a dramatic impact on the quality of sleep you get each night. Do you prefer one side to the other? Are you a rare stomach sleeper? These unconscious decisions can not only affect our health, but the type of mattress we choose to buy.

With the introduction and dramatic rise of of latex mattresses into the market, it’s important to investigate what material is really right for each individual. Is latex perfect for every sleeper, no matter their sleep position?  After all, one size does not fit all. Have you found the perfect sleep solution for your sleep style?

Side sleep position

The most common sleep style is the side sleep position. Like its name, this sleep style indicates that you sleep primarily on your side, which in turn holds the weight of your entire body. The position itself can vary but it has been proven to have many physical health benefits.

A study found that those who sleep on their side can also see a reduction in sleep apnea. How? The base of the tongue will not collapse into the back of the throat when you’re on your side, which narrows the airway and can obstruct breathing. The American Pregnancy Association also recommends that expectant mothers should adopt a side sleeping position while they’re carrying to help increase circulation and the amount of blood and nutrients that can reach the baby.

Which side you choose to sleep on can also have an impact on your health. If you sleep on your right side, you may see an increase in heartburn. Sleeping on the left side can mean risking a strain on your internal organs (liver, lungs and stomach) but also a potential reduction in acid reflux.

Popular variations of side sleep positions are:

  • The Fetal- both legs curled together
  • The Log- both legs fully extended/ military straight
  • The Sprinter- one leg straight, one leg bent

Look for a mattress that’s perfect for your specific sleep style.  Side sleepers should look for a mattress that is on the softer side. Because this position places increased pressure on joints like the shoulder and hip, a mattress with better contouring capability is key. The last thing anyone wants is to wake up to the dreaded sensation of poor circulation/ your arm falling asleep.  The ideal mattress will accommodate the body’s natural curve and keep the spine aligned, no matter the sleep style.

It can be. Latex mattresses can be great for side sleepers because they offer excellent contouring capability and more flexible firmness levels. Talalay latex, for example, is softer and more contouring than Dunlop, so a mattress made of Talalay latex can be perfect for a side sleeper.

Back or supine sleep position

Many believe that the back sleep position, or supine position, supports better sleep quality and is the best for your overall health. The only caveat? Those who suffer from Obstructive sleep disorders and sleep apnea should avoid the supine sleep position.

“Body position greatly affects the number and severity of episodes of obstructive sleep apnea, with at least twice as many apneas occurring in people who lay on their back as in those who sleep on their side. This may be due to the effects of gravity, which cause the throat to narrow when a person lies on the back.” (University of Maryland Medical Center)

The back sleep position is said to be ideal because it’s allowing your mattress to do what it does best- support your body. When you’re lying on your back, you’re in the perfect position for your mattress to support your spine and back naturally, with no additional pressures. It’s the only sleep style where your weight is evenly distributed across your skeletal frame.

According to Medical Daily, lying on your back means the stomach sits below the esophagus, making it less likely for digested substances to come up, making it great for preventing acid reflux. It’s also been known to prevent face wrinkles and skin breakouts because your face is not touching sheets or other skin.

Like in the side sleep position, back sleep styles can vary from sleeper to sleeper.

  • Soldier – flat on your back with arms and legs held tight to your side
  • Starfish – on your back, arms stretched towards your head and your legs stretched out

If you sleep on your back, look for a mattress that offers excellent back and lumbar support. Avoid mattresses that are either too soft or too firm and instead, opt for a mattress of medium firmness (the goldilocks). The most important quality to look for is that your spine is properly supported and aligned and that you’re not sinking into the mattress surface. Again, additional lumbar support is important so they’re supported where you need to be.

Latex mattresses can be great for those who sleep on their back in the supine position. Because of its unique production process, Talalay latex can vary in firmness, making it a great material for those who need a special mixture of comfort levels. Latex is also a perfect material for proper spinal alignment, so you don’t have to worry about being properly supported while you sleep.

Stomach sleep position

Sleeping on your stomach is widely regarded as the worst sleeping position. When you’re lying on your stomach, your spine is naturally curved, and you will likely wake up with some sort of back pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, if you sleep on your stomach, put a pillow under your pelvis to reduce the strain on your lower back. Sleeping on your stomach can also cause additional stress on your neck since you’re forced to twist your neck in either direction as you sleep to breathe.

“Think about the soreness you’d feel if you kept your neck turned to one side for 15 minutes during the day. In this position, you have your head to one side for hours at a time. You won’t necessarily feel it the next day, but you may soon start to ache.” (CNN)

It’s not all bad. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that those who suffer from sleep apnea will see a reduction in apneas and awakenings if they sleep on their stomach. Why? Sleeping facedown means that your upper airways are more open. If you snore and don’t find yourself in a lot of pain, stomach sleeping may be the ideal position for you.

Best mattress for the stomach sleep position

Stomach sleepers should look for a mattress that’s more firm and has less cushion. It all originates at our ideal body position and proper spinal alignment. The closest we can get to an aligned spine and body, the better. When you sleep on your stomach, your spine is naturally curved more, and a mattress with more cushion will make that increase even further. A more firm mattress will help give the proper support you need, and a pillow under the hips can help further align your spine.

Because stomach sleepers need a firmer surface, latex could be a perfect solution. Those who sleep on latex mattresses often describe the feeling as “weightless”, noting that you feel like you’re floating on top of the mattress, rather than sinking into it. Those who sleep on their stomachs need that type of weightlessness to help align their spine.

Combination sleep positions

Can’t choose a sleep style? Combination sleepers tend to alternate between two (or all) sleep styles throughout the night.

Combination sleepers should find a mattress that suits their specific needs. One size does not fit all, so find something that can help support you no matter how you choose to sleep. A medium-firm mattress is usually a great solution for those who want comfort but all around support. If your sleep style varies, avoid a surface that’s too soft, and also too firm.
